Emancipation Day is the best time economically for Businesses. A large home coming festival organized by the Inagua Development Association commences annually on the Friday before Emancipation Day, which is celebrated on the first Monday of August. During this special period Inaguans, relatives, and friends of Inaguans living in other Bahamian Islands and other countries of the world come to Mathew Town by the hundreds.
Homecoming presents opportunity for members of a family or a community to come together to renew acquaintances and rejoice in a common heritage. The Inagua Homecoming has two unique events: the country’s only wild donkey derby and the aluminum skiff boat race. There is also a keen Junkanoo competition between Nassau and Inagua, a boxing competition, a beauty pageant, domino tournament, beer drinking, wet tee shirt, and conch-cracking contest. In the sporting arena, Inagua takes on other Bahamian Islands and the Turks and Caicos. There is always an abundant of native foods, drinks, and music for all to enjoy.
Inaguan musicians
During the Homecoming weekend many local Inaguan musicians who are quite successful in the music industry return home to entertain the community of Inagua. Noted musicians who play principally authentic Bahamian music known as Rake N’ Scrape are Avvy, Bazzy and Stellite. Great Inagua is known for producing some of the better musicians in the country, including, the famous Blake Alphonso Higgs better known as ‘Blind Blake’. Blind Blake was the most famous Goombay musician in The Bahamas from the 1930’s to 1960’s.
