Harbour
There are several natural harbours on Great Inagua, despite information to the contrary published elsewhere. Morton Salt & K + S has a private pier capable of accommodating ships with overall lengths of up to 800 feet. The depth alongside the dock at low water is 40 feet. Morton Salt Terminal is currently being repaired by Misener Marine after sustaining damages from hurricane Ike on September 7th, 2008.
Mathew Town has a roadstead anchorage and a 200 x 200 foot dredged marina, and the entire coast from Mathew Town to North-west Point is clear with no reefs or treacherous shoals. Alfred Sound is a natural harbour lying inside a reef that extends from Northwest Point to Sheep Cay. This sound has two channels in the reef, which can easily be entered with the assistance of local mariners. A vessel drawing up to eight feet can seek shelter in Alfred Sound during bad weather. Lantern Head Harbour on Great Inagua and Mudjen harbour on Little Inagua can accommodate vessels with a draft of six feet, but again assistance of local seamen is needed. The United States Coast Guard in collaboration with the Bahamian government shall expand Mathew Town Marina, which will be capable of accommodating larger vessels. The project was scheduled to commence early 2012.
